This wagon was purchased new around 1914 by a young
farmer near Lowell, Indiana. The man who sold it to the current owner
remembers the wagon being used through the years as he and his family
worked the farm. The wagon served well, and as the years passed, it
finally fell into disrepair.
SOLD
Around 1992, the wagon left the farm for the first time in almost 80
years and made its way 20 miles east on a trailer to Valparaiso. The new
owner, and a friend who was a master woodworker, began the painstaking
process of rediscovering early 20th century manufacturing techniques and
rebuilt the wagon completely.
Both hobby sawmill sawyers, they utilized the best oak materials
throughout the project. Every original wooden part – the whole
undercarriage, including the complete forecarriage, axletree, bolster,
5th wheel, the rear axle – was made new. All of the metal pieces were in
excellent shape, and the wheels and hubs showed little yet normal wear.
When done, the wagon was set to work again under any acceptable load.
The gear has always been stored under roof, and was used for five years
as a mobile buzz saw rig with a large 7hp hit and miss engine. When the
engine was sold, the owner refitted the running gear with the current
oak deck and used it for hauling on the property as well as an
occasional trip to the local steam show. Around 2000, the rig was parked
in the haybarn, where it has been ever since. Today, this quality piece
is still in terrific shape and ready for another 80 years of service.
